My review:
Difficulty: I used to do a scale of 1-10 kind of thing but I find it is simply easier this way. If you are a n00b - you will most likely get your ass kicked. By n00b, I mean, you don't usually play FPS. I am an average to above average player and as you can tell from the below video, I was able to move about fairly quickly. To be fair though, this had been my second trip through but regardless, not the most difficult (by a longshot) map I've ever played. Expert players may find themselves somewhat bored. I wasn't, but there was more than enough ammo and health to play this thing through. Some basic strafing moves keep damage from Imp fireballs to a minimum and the pistol and/or shotgun are more than sufficient to deal with everything you will see here.
Level design: I still maintain that it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to design a bad looking map in any of the modern engines. With dynamic lighting and better AI, you are almost guaranteed to produce something that looks pretty good without a ton of effort. Of course, there are varying levels of good and this one was more or less middle of the road. The map flows well and it isn't too cramped to fight in. The architecture wasn't spectacular but neither was it boring. The author kept enough going on around you to keep you from getting bored. I've seen other maps, though, which make you go - WOW! This wasn't one of them. It is solid, however and the ambience set by placement of lights was pretty good.
Playability: The first time around in this map, I found myself hesitant in some situations, not knowing what was coming at me. The video I took (below) was my second time in the map and as you can see, it was pretty smooth. I think this map is more or less a once and done, is what I'm trying to say. There are some surprises and some good battles but once you've done them, well, you've done them. I thought it was possible to make it so that you could randomize elements of the game. ???
Overall: I enjoyed playing this map. It was too short in my opinion but gameplay was solid and design wasn't bad. I recommend it for those who have slightly better than average skills and on down the skill ladder. Upper echelon players won't be impressed and should keep looking.
The Video!
