    what is Doom Rpg?

Doom rpg is John Carmack's efforts to bring Doom to YOUR mobile phone. Here is the "official" description:

"Doom RPG is a first-person turn-based role playing game set in the Doom universe. Developed specifically for your mobile device, you reprise the role of the Doom Marine made famous in the groundbreaking id Software titles Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3. Say goodbye to humdrum mobile gaming and prepare yourself for the return to Mars in a showdown with the legions of Hell!"

The Lowdown:

I've had an opportunity to play with this a little bit and from that I can give you a little info. I own a Motorola V220 phone. The download was simple - I was able to use the built in browser to go to Cingular's website and download it. It was like 400k or something along those lines. It installed automatically (it uses the java base in the phone) and hearing the Doom music playing on my phone was cool.

After spending some quality time with this, I can tell you that it looks more like Wolfenstein 3d than Doom. There was nothing to it as far as architecture and the the ceilings and floors are the same as they were in the Wolfenstein game. Also, like Wolfenstein, you will battle with dogs (which DON'T make an appearance in Doom). You will interact with characters in the game (scientists, civilians and even computers) which is something that happens in Doom3 but not in Doom or Wolfenstein.

So, was it worth the download? YES! Unquestionably. Even with the jerky graphics (not too bad), it was better than any 2 dimensional game for the phone could hope to be. It is a 3D environment which requires you to interact with it as opposed to simply shooting and killing. There are puzzles to be solved, fires to be put out and dogs to be hacked up.

Where to get it

As far as I know, you can navigate with your phone to the games/rpg area of your carriers site or you can go to Jamdat.com and order the game. A text message will be sent to your phone telling you where to go to get the download. There is also a complete list of phones which will work with the game as well as other info. Another site I recommend is Doomrpg.com. By going there you will find more screenshots, a user manual, faq, and more....
