Adventures in Quake
Ever since I had gotten Windows XP I hadn't been able to run my Quake game. So, no biggie, my Quake two game was cool and I was happy. Then my Quake 2 cd got scratched by one of my kids or something and wouldn't work any longer. DAMN! So I broke out the Quake cd and fired it up. Naturally, it installed fine but wouldn't play. Now, I have the original game - version 1.0 or 1.1 or whatever the hell it is and figured I'd upgrade (link is in the table to the left). Naturally, that wasn't enough. I downloaded GLQuake (nope - didn't work and still doesn't). So, I downloaded Winquake. DAMN! Still didn't work. So I went looking for a patch from Microsoft. Sure enough - I had to download service pack one. No biggie. That did it. So whats the point of all of this? I'm telling you so if you're one of those people who, like me, found yourself out in the cold with your Quake game after getting Windows XP - it can be fixed. Upgrade to the newest version, get Winquake and download service pack 1 and you should be in business. Just thought I'd pass that along. And, as opposed to the searching and frustration that I went through with the screwed up download format on Quakeworld - you can skip all that - I have the downloads direct from my site and you don't have to sign up for shit.

Some other useful info: I get alot of people asking how to take screenshots in the game. I don't know about Quake3 but in Quake and Quake2 you simply hit the f12 key. Quake saves screenshots as .pcx files in the id1 directory and Quake2 saves them in the screenshot directory. Loading maps: This is truly easy. from the command line you type Quake or Quake2 +map mapname.... don't add the .bsp part - just the name. If the file is a pak file then you would give it its own subdirectory and load it like this: Quake -game nameofgame. I find that most Quake/Quake 2 text files explain how to load the maps.

A special Situation: I am stuck using my backup copy of Quake because my original got trashed somewhere along the line over the years. Unfortunately, the game does not read the backup cd as being in the drive so I had to find a solution. Again, the console came into play and saved my ass. I can't remember exactly which command allowed me to tell the game to stop looking for the cd but here's a link to an extensive list of console commands for all the Quake games: Click here!

This file was brought to my attention by a friend on the site. It is an engine for the Quake 2 game called Quake 2 Evolved. Allow me let the creators tell you about their baby.
Quake II Evolved is a high end graphical update to id Softwares Quake 2. Using advanced effects such as Per Pixel Lighting and Shadowing, Fragment And Vertex Programs, High Resolution textures and models, and an advanced version of the Doom 3 Shader System, Quake II Evolved's goal is a simple one; To take Quake 2, and pump up the detail to tomorrows standards.

Here are a couple of screenshots to show you what this engine can do. I took the first one at the beginning of map 1 in regular Quake2 and the second one using the Quake II Evolved engine. You decide:

You can find out more about the Quake II Evolved engine by clicking here to go to their website! Also, if you are having difficulty running Quake 2 in your XP machine, this should solve your problem. - Update added November 6, 2006

Finally - thanks for checking out my page and I hope some of this info has been helpful. Enjoy!

The DOOM WAD STATION Quake pages

Hi, and welcome to my Quake and Quake2 pages. Here you will find utilities to help you get your Quake game working with Windows XP plus a map editor for Quake and Quake 2 - Worldcraft. There are also shareware downloads of Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 and, of course, maps. The page is beginning to get some substance to it and I am working on adding more as time permits. This is, after all, still Doom Wad Station so I concentrate on that first. When I have time I try to add new Quake and Quake 2 maps. If you have any suggestions - please let me know.

Latest update = I added the Dark Places OpenGL engine to the list of Quake Downloads. I HIGHLY recommend this for Windows XP users!
